Purpose and goal

The purpose of this project is to improve mining safety, decrease damage to mine infrastructure and mining equipment, decrease production disturbances and reduce ore losses caused by dangerous rockburst events. The detailed objectives are to: develop a mine-scale numerical tool and a new analysis technique that give further insight into seismic hazard evaluation optimise mining sequences by using the numerical tool developed provide guidance on how to evaluate and minimise seismic hazard at LKAB’s Kiirunavaara Mine.

Expected results and effects

The expected results from this project will comprise: A numerical tool for assessing burst potential of discontinuities based on the stiffness criterion A new analysis technique for providing further insight into seismic hazard evaluation A guidance obtained to evaluate and minimise seismic hazard in the mine. The results from this project will lead to one technical report and at least one peer-reviewed conference/journal paper.

Planned approach and implementation

The study will comprise various activities. Analysis of mining-induced seismicity Development of a mine-scale numerical model for assessing burst potential of discontinuities Calibration of the numerical model using historical seismic events Optimisation of mining sequences by using the numerical model developed Development of guidance on evaluation of seismic hazard Web-based conferences will be used for project progress meetings and discussion. A workshop will be organised with participants from the mines and the university after the project is finished.
