2019-11-21

Nearly fifty participants gathered at Clarion Hotel in Luleå on November 7 when SIP STRIM invited to a workshop on AI in Mining – Hype or Hope? The workshop was based on preliminary results from the AI study conducted by SIP STRIM during the year, and both the study and the results from the workshop will form the basis for the investments that SIP STRIM is making in the area further on.

During the morning, the participants got inspirational lectures from prominent people in the area, as well as from industry representatives who gave the companies views on AI. Special guest and inspirer for the day was Ishtar Touilat, Global Head of AI and Innovation at TechBuddy. Ishtar who is Awarded Female Leader of the Future, one of Sweden’s most powerful women and Sweden’s foremost innovation talent gave her view on AI for Success, and how AI can affect business processes, technical development and leadership. Is it worth doing in the same way you always did if you want to achieve new results? That she inspired the participants with her new thinking was clear when the group had a hard time ending in time for lunch.

Luleå University of Technology’s “robot guru” Professor George Nikolakopoulos talked about the Robotics Team at LTU’s work and what progress they have made under the heading Robotics in Mining. The industry representatives who spoke about the companies’ view of AI were David Degerfeldt, Boliden, Håkan Tyni, LKAB and Anders Hedlund, BI Nordic.

In the afternoon, Pär-Erik Martinsson and Ulf Andersson from ProcessIT informed about the AI study, and their data and information were taken into the workshop. Questions that participants gathered around were need of competence, business values for industry and the way forward. The participants who came from industry, institutes and academia as well as computer associations and consulting companies summarized the day as very rewarding and hope that in future it could be gathered around issues related to AI.
